Fans Asked to Help Bring 'Morganville Vampires' Series To Life

Want to see Claire, Shane, Michael, Eve, Myrnin and the rest of Morganville brought to life?

Fans of the popular book series The Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine are being urged to help bring the Vampire series to life by contributing towards funding a web series directed by Blake Calhoun. I've always been a little sceptical about the series being made into a movie or TV show through fear of it being changed in some way or the casting not living up to the expectations I have of the characters in my head. But if Rachel Caine is involved then there's no better way of bringing the much loved series to life than having the author herself overseeing the project.

Now fans can help turn this into reality. Read on to find out how...

From Rachel Caine:
So, either you’re a lover of vampire fiction, or a YA novel fan, or a reader of my books, or a follower of Blake Calhoun’s (Loud Pictures) excellent work … or you’re here totally by mistake. In any case, WELCOME!

This is the Kickstarter to fund an adaptation of the Morganville Vampires novels for web TV. And it will be epic.

If you don’t know anything about Morganville, here goes: a brave teen (Claire Danvers) moves to the very isolated West Texas town to attend the local university, only to (a) run afoul of the local mean (very mean) girls, and (b) move to the safety of off-campus housing with three strangers.

But the plot thickens when she discovers that her new housemates aren’t crazy: Morganville really is run by vampires. They own it, and every one in it. And now ... they own her.

The series is a New York Times, USA Today and #1 international bestseller, and the first novel, Glass Houses, was recently voted the most popular book among UK school children … ahead of powerhouses like Twilight and Harry Potter. There are 14 novels currently available, with the last, Daylighters, coming out November 2013.

I’m from Texas, as is my co-conspirator (and producer/director) Blake Calhoun. And we’re planning to film in Texas – where the novels are set – if this Kickstarter succeeds.

What do we need? $75,000 in production cash to fund the essential first season costs like actors, equipment, effects, music … and, of course, the goodies we’re offering as incentives. If we go over that goal, we’ll make better episodes, or even more episodes.

But what we really need is you. Your support, and spreading the word to others, because Morganville fans want to see this happen … we’ve got the emails, petitions and fan videos to prove it.

So become a Morganville resident. We promise … you’ll never want to leave. Thank you!

From Blake:
I'm a big believer in the D2F (Direct-To-Fan) world we now find ourselves living in whether it be for musicians, writers, filmmakers or artists in general. It's a great time to be a content creator. And there honestly couldn't be a more interesting project for me to be involved with than this one...

An international best-selling book series with (built-in) fans around the world - and no TV show or movie has been made yet? I'm in.

I think if you were looking for a recipe for crowd-funding a project this would be it and I'm very humbled and grateful to be involved.

I've produced and directed four online series (web TV shows) including PINK-The Series, Exposed (for Warner Bros. and TheWB.com), an indie sci-fi thriller called Continuum and 88 HITS, a mockumentary about a mob family who's going broke. These shows have been distributed around the world and have millions of views on sites like Hulu, YouTube, Koldcast TV, JTS TV, and more.

So from the experience I've gained from this past work, I hope to successfully bring these books to life - with your help of course.

Thank you for whatever you can contribute whether it be a simple tweet (or re-tweet) or $10,000 to become a Co-Producer of the show. Everything helps (especially $10K). :) Thank you!

UPDATED: Here are the current FAQ's from the Kickstarter page:

FAQ

  • We're not ready yet to answer that question ... right now, we're concentrating on raising the funds necessary to make the series happen. Once we have successfully concluded the Kickstarter, we'll have more information coming out about how the audition process will work.
  • Research shows that web TV series tend to be watched differently than broadcast television ...viewers prefer shorter episodes so that they can watch in shorter chunks of time. Shows that clock in longer than 10 minute episodes tend to lose viewers. Think of it this way: when you watch broadcast TV, the shows are structured for commercial breaks about every ten minutes. And when we release the entire season, you can watch them back to back!
  • We plan on completing principal photography (contingent on successful funding) for the entire season by mid- to late October, but quality post production takes time. We're planning to have the trailer and preview reel out in December 2013.
  • We can't really answer that question yet until the Kickstarter successfully concludes; at that point, we'll be looking at all the available distribution models. However, remember that if we're successful in this campaign, some reward levels come with downloads and/or DVDs!
  • A full-length movie with good production values would probably cost at least three times the amount we're asking for, and generally comes with distribution problems that require additional money to solve. After exploring all the options, we think a quality web TV show is really the way to go.
  • We haven't picked specific locations yet, but we'll definitely (pending the successful funding) be filming in and around Dallas/Fort Worth in Texas. The bonus is that we'll be filming in the state where Morganville is (theoretically) located, in the novels.
  • We don't know yet, except that the amazing Amber Benson is attached to play Amelie, the Founder of Morganville. We will be casting later after the Kickstarter successfully funds.
  • YES! Rachel has a ton of readers and fans outside of the US, and we have structured the Kickstarter to allow for shipping to other countries (although we've had to structure in a nominal shipping fee to cover the costs). We do plan to make the series available worldwide (although it will be filmed in English).
  • Rachel currently plans to take a rest after Book 15, but she is considering doing some short stories following some of the characters in 2014. More on that later!
  • Great question! Rachel is writing the scripts for the first season, and she confirms that she's following the plotlines of the first two books of the series ... but she's also reserving the right to make some changes for budget reasons, and also just for the flow of the series. But you know what? YOU WILL ALSO SEE MYRNIN, even though he doesn't technically show up until the third book. (We knew you Myrnin fans would ask.)
Now I'm imagining it, I'm quite excited about it but also a little nervous that it be done right. What are your thoughts on Morganville Vampires becoming a web TV show and Amber Benson being attached to the roll of Amelie? Hit me in the comments below. I'd love to hear what you think.
